It began as a home brewing setup and burst onto the craft scene of Ontario in 2012 - a Sleeping Giant has awoken. In 2012 they only had a few beers coming off the line, but within a few years the brewery moved to a bigger site and began putting out a full slate of beers. The Sleeping Giant family has become a well-known beer making machine in TB and beyond. The Giant believes in making great beer and using their success to support the community around Thunderbay - their taproom is more than just a place to get a freshly pulled pint, it’s a community hub for everyone around. The Reddy McRed Ale is a classic Irish red ale style - a strong malt taste and low bitterness that delivers a smooth, light-bodied beer that’s imminently drinkable. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to six months.
Pours a dark amber colour with a hazy body and low carbonation. A thin layer of small, frothy off-white foam that pours from the can.
Quite a subtle aroma from this beer. There’s a warm, toasted grain malt and a slightly funky, barn-yard aroma that reminds one of a classic sour, although it doesn’t quite fall into that category.
The laid back aroma is followed by a laid-back flavour. This is one tough cookie to coax out the flavours. It’s light and subtle, so take your time enjoying it. There’s the toasted grain malt on the bottom of the flavour, and the funkiness shows up as a slightly leathery taste along with a sizzling acidity on the tongue. Finishes dry and with a loamy aftertaste. Strange but interesting - let it rest on the palate a bit.
The flavour is so subtle that nearly any tasty item from the grill will work - but not too spicy or tangy, or you won’t take the beer at all.
