Profile

Opening their doors in 2014, Oliphant Brewing is making tasty craft beer for Wisconsinites, but their work is making its way across the land. Started by Matt Wallace and Trevor Wirtanen, Oliphant doesn’t take itself too seriously, but they do put out high-quality craft beer. In their time, they’ve managed to produce more than 300 different beers, running the gamut of styles. Light and Dark ales, tons of diverse IPAs, and many fruited Sours (because why not?) Oliphant’s taproom is half art gallery and half beer heaven. 25 taps are serving up beer at any given time, and there’s something for every beer lover out there. The Rusket Red is an Amber lager made (according to the brewer) in Wisconsin style. But don’t worry, there’s very little cheese in it. Smooth bodied and following the Amber plan right down the middle, this is an easy drinking lager. Serves well at 6°C and can cellar for up to six months.

Look

Pours a dark amber colour with a fairly clear body and light carbonation. A frothy head of lightly tinted foam rests on top of the glass.

Smell

Toasted grain and bread aroma, along with the classic caramel malt sweetness. The background has a strong boozy character, but doesn’t quite fall over into a straight alcohol aroma.

Taste

The flavour leans heavily into the toasted grain, almost pushing all other flavours off the palate completely. But you can pick up a bit of the hops before the taste dashes away. It finishes quickly, leaving behind no real aftertaste but quite the dry, lip smacking mouthfeel. Let the beer rest on your tongue for a touch longer than you normally would, so you can dig out the subtle and speedy flavour.

Pairing

Maybe have this one by itself or you’ll miss most of what it has to offer.
