Founded in 1995, Bear Republic Brewing Company became a staple in Northern California and then spread the greatness far and wide. After a decade of success, they opened up more brewing in Cloverdale and pushed their market out of the west. Bear Republic is built on the philosophy of efficient, straight-forward brewing that creates straight-forward, delicious beer. And they credit their success to the people who have worked with them, volunteered at events, and supported their expansions over the years. A community of beer loving people, working together for success. Despite being a take on a Scottish ale, the Red Rocket Ale veers from the line of a classic Amber with a sniff more hop character, giving it a piney bitter kick and sizzling mouth feel. All the warmth of the Amber but with some attitude. Serves well at 8°C and should be enjoyed within a few months.
Pours a dark, tawny colour with a mostly occluded body and medium carbonation. A thin layer of small bubbles forms a solid head on the top of the glass.
Quite a bit hoppier on the nose than you might expect from an Amber, but the sweeter malt elements help to even it out. A touch of floral aroma around the edges as well.
All the warmth of the amber malt gets backed up with a strong kick of bitter, piney hop flavour. However, the amber malt drifts away, while the bracing pine sticks around as some sweetness and floral elements emerge after warming on the tongue. The mouthfeel borders on caustic and really drives the edge of this beer home. Finishes up with a snappy ending that leaves some of the pine and floral.
Good with something from the grill that’s got some spice to it. Find yourself a Cajun Chicken Sandwich for a tasty pair.
