Profile

Brian Strumke heard the first rumblings of craft brewing in the basement of his Baltimore rental in 2010 and it would take a few years before the sound and taste of that name was known beyond one man. Originally invented to be a roaming craft idea that relied on the help of contract brewers and good friends, Strumke made beer around the world for close to a decade. After 10 years of roaming and brewing, Stillwater Artisanal has taken up a permanent address in the South West of Washington, where beers can be thrown at Seattle and Portland with equal ease. But despite finally settling down, Strumke is determined to maintain the diversity that Stillwater produces, as a reflection of the journeys he’s taken and still plans to take with our taste buds. Stillwater has worked hard to make the Filson Maritime Gose a reflection of the land they live on, with pine and fruit, sea and salt. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for a few months at least.

Look

Pours a pale yellow colour with a hazy body and low carbonation. A frizzy head rings the top of the glass.

Smell

An aroma of wet straw and blood orange with a salty backbone to remind you of those days on the sea.

Taste

A touch of wheat malt gets lit up by the accompanying citrus fruit body and zest. The sweetness of the fruits gets balanced out by a salty and earthy hop profile with just a hint of lush green punching through. The mouthfeel is slightly dry throughout but gets a bit sandy at the end, where it links up with the remains of the fruit for a pleasant finish.

Pairing

Well it was made from the sea and for the sea, so you’d best get your clam bake or any other fresh catch onto the coals and spritz the lemon across it.
