Profile

The MicroBrasserie Charlevoix got started in 1998 after inspiration struck from a trip to Belgium. Frédérick Tremblay and his wife, Caroline Bandulet, found themselves less than impressed with the results of their home brewing kits and looked for some professional help. What might have been an ambitious hobby almost instantly turned serious when they got their hands on a small 500-litre system. Soon they were developing their own yeast and not long after it only made sense to put this work into bottles. And sell it to their locals. By 2003 they were a full-time operation and needed to expand. Now they produce 25 different styles of beer, employ over 100 people, and their beers reach more than 2000 points in eastern Canada. The name means “It's Always Summer Somewhere” and that’s a beautiful sentiment. Made with New Zealand hops and Saison yeast, this is a unique one to try. Serves well at 6°C and you should get on it.

Look

Pours a light golden colour with a slightly hazy body and low carbonation. Watch out on the pour - the foam will escape the glass, but after the initial explosion it all fades away.

Smell

A strong vinous aroma is joined by the scent of hay, leather, and a touch of sweet fruit.

Taste

The grape flavour from the nose shows up but far less sharp, more of the sweeter fruit comes through. The funkier elements are laid back, allowing a smooth, caramel malt and slightly bitter leafy green to come through. But that all fades off quickly, leaving behind a much stronger bitterness and minerality. Slightly dry finish in the mouth.

Pairing

Time for the charcuterie board to get dusted off and the finest of cheeses to make your acquaintance.
