Profile

More than a few good reasons exist to pack up and roll through the mountains to Revelstoke, but another one has come knocking — Mt. Begbie Brewing. Brewing began in the mid-90’s when Tracey and Bart Larson shifted gears from hard-core scientific endeavours to the alchemy of craft brewing. Mt.Begbie has a dozen craft beers in their repertoire, including IPA and Porter, and now they add this limited release to the board — Faux Paw. Inspired by the paws prints left on the floor of their new brewing facility by the bear who haunted the building during construction, searching for something to munch on. The Brave Liver is a Scottish ale built on Pale Ale malts with Oak and Scotch flavours shining through. An award winning beer that will warm you up for nights in front of the hearth. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to six months.

Look

Pours a dark brown colour with a hazy body and low carbonation. A thin layer of white bubbles rests on top of the pour.

Smell

Pretty much everything you’ll smell on this beer is the warm and sweet malt. There’s a hint of the scotch and oak flirting in the background, but it’s very faint.

Taste

A mild and sweet malt flavour up front carries through the entire tasting. As it warms on the palate, you’ll taste more of the oak and scotch, but it never becomes cloying. There’s a touch of greenery delivered by the hops but it stays way in the back and is mostly noticeable after the swallow. The body is smooth and stays that way throughout, with a lingering finish that fades off.

Pairing

A great beer for a well made roast beef sandwich on sourdough bread. Throw in a tasty dill pickle for a lively complement.
