Profile

Dead Frog began its life as the Backwoods Brewing company started by Derrick and Donna Smith in B.C. But the beers and branding weren't getting it done and the lack of taproom kept people from discovering their brews. Rebranding as Dead Frog and opening up to the public, the Smiths found themselves finally achieving the beer making heaven they'd hoped for. In 2018, the whole operation moved into a bigger facility in the heart of Langley with a proper tasting room and 20 brews on tap. Now their home-grown style, using local ingredients sourced from the bounty of British Columbia is making itself known. The Steel Toe Lager is based on the American style: lean, mean, and refreshing. A blade of crisp beer slicing through your thirst. Hops are kept in check and a slightly sweet malt base makes for easy drinking. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for 3 months.

Look

Pours a pale yellow colour with a mostly clear body and medium carbonation. A frothy pillow of bubbles sticks around on top for a while.

Smell

A touch of funk combines with the flesh and zest from fresh lemons for an interesting take on the lager. A touch of grainy malt and musty pine hint at the hops involved.

Taste

A lot of bready malt and toasted crackers arrive on the palate. The carbonation has a strange bite to it, waking up your taste buds but also muddling some of the senses. There's some sweet fruit leaning toward an apple flavour and some wet, loamy earth, along with fresh green hops. This is an odd duck of a lager but easy drinking with a snappy finish.

Pairing

Pair this up with fully loaded nachos that have that spicy chicken on top.
