Profile

Closing in on three years of brewing, SYC Brewing in Edmonton, Alberta, has moved from a local taproom with tasty beers, to a brewer that is getting national attention. Started in 2019, SYC has been operating in the industrial sector of Edmonton and producing more beers in three years than many manage in a decade. Rocking a slate with nearly twenty available beers, spanning the styles of Italian Pilsner, Dry-hopped Ale, Blonde, French Blanche, Saison, and more, SYC is taking old-world styles and making sure anyone who tastes them knows they have new-world craft behind them. Sourcing all of their ingredients from the farms and producers of Alberta, SYC is dedicated to creating beers that are delightful to drink and produced at the highest quality. The Na Zdraví is a Czech-style pale ale, a close cousin to the paler Pilsner style, but with a touch darker body and deeper flavour profile. Smooth mouthfeel and easy drinking, this beer serves well at 8°C and can cellar for six months.

Look

Pours a very pale yellow colour with a clear body and light carbonation. A frothy head of small bubbles forms after the pour and slowly fades away.

Smell

Very mild aroma on this beer, you’ll pick up a bit of straw malt, wet hay, a bit of floral hops, and a slightly acrid aroma like hand soap. There’s a very light fruity aroma but it’s hard to pin down.

Taste

An equally mild flavour although it leans on the soapy by upping the floral taste. This isn’t a bad thing by the way, it just has a similar character to jasmine rice or plum wine. After the initial flavour, the floral fades off and the malt comes in to balance things out. It’s a fairly fast taste experience, fading off to a slightly astringent mouthfeel and bitter aftertaste. This is a thinker beer, so let it warm on the tongue a bit before the swallow.

Pairing

A tough pairing, put it together with something mild and let them play in the sandbox together - grilled salmon with lemon-rice is easy and pleasant.
