Profile

Born from a rebellious spirit, Garrison Brewing was launched on the north-end of Nova Scotia at a time when craft beer was in what seemed to be death throes. In 1997, the crew of Garrison fought against the dying of the light by releasing an Irish Red Ale and Nut Brown Ale that were well received. A handful of other odd nik beers came out of the brewery and when 2004 rolled around, the craft scene was beginning its next renaissance and rise. The scrappy Garrison needed to move into a bigger facility to accommodate their success - the new facility was a breath of air to a flickering flame and the brewery kicked into an expansion. It only took 8 years to outgrow even this new space. They built a custom brewhouse and Garrison has grown to become a powerhouse of maritime craft brewing, known across the land. The Tall Ship is an English Pale Ale, with a subtle flavour and easy drinking body. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for six months.

Look

Pours a pale straw colour with a clear body and medium carbonation. A frothy head of slightly yellow foam pours from the can and slowly fades.

Smell

Almost entirely an aroma of slightly wet straw that’s warming in the sun. There’s a hint of earthy hops but it’s hard to keep a hold on it.

Taste

A laid-back flavour on this beer, mostly made up of a slightly toasted grain malt that has a bit of sweetness and chalky flavour similar to unsalted oyster crackers. As the beer crosses the palate there’s a bit of lemon zest but it comes and goes like a whip crack. The mouthfeel is dry and slightly grainy, feeling like you’ve throw a pinch of sand into your mouth. Fast flavour that doesn’t leave much in its wake.

Pairing

Get into a lobster tail with butter sauce to kick up the flavours.
