Introduction

Kurtis Sheldon and Chris Charron both have driver’s licenses. They also both make beer for a living. The duo started up Slow Hand Beer Company in 2017 and have been working on a rotating slate of lagers ever since. In fact, they ONLY work on lagers. The creation of the brewery was based on the desire to make better Lagers for the good people of British Columbia to drink. Now with almost two dozen versions having come out of their brains and into cans for the thirsty to enjoy, they continue the pilgrimage to Lager. Being a slow and laborious process, Lager is a tricky thing to do well and to innovate. The duo rely on European styles brewed with West Coast savvy. Most of their beers can be considered session beers. The Munich Helles is based on the German-style of Helles lager (meaning pale). These beers tend to be slightly sweet and with a spicy hop flavour. Serves well at 8°C and can hang around the beer cooler for six months.

How it looks

Pours a pale yellow colour with a clear body and light carbonation. Only a thin ring of bubbles remains after coming out of the can.

How it smells

Quite a mild aroma but you can pick out the citrus zest and flesh, along with a sugary quality that will remind you of fruit juice. The malt is hiding way deep down and is difficult to describe.

How it tastes

The flavour experience in this beer is pretty quick, so definitely take a generous mouthful and let it wash over your palate. It’s crisp and sweet, like white grape juice, with some grainy malt in the background to anchor it. There’s a hint of lemon zest and flesh, and it all goes over the tongue like lightning before leaving behind a slightly dry finish and sweetness. It’s light and easy drinking, good for a session beer.

Recommended food pairing

Slightly vinous in flavour, so get something savoury to match up - a good Ribeye with greens never goes wrong.
