Introduction
After 23 years and multiple awards, Shipyard Brewing Company is gaining popularity and recognition amid the craft beer community. Hailing from the other Portland (Maine), Shipyard was co-founded by master brewer Alan Pugsley, whose goal was to use high quality raw ingredients to brew balanced, drinkable beer with distinct character. They deliver on their promise with a wide variety of year rounds, seasonals and specialty beers that are rooted in tradition and expertise, yet are anything but ordinary. The Smashed Blueberry is a great example of what Shipyard is all about. Part of Pugsley’s Signature Series, this Porter Scotch Ale is an intense and complex beer. For most flavoured Porters, the challenge is stability; some can be overly sweet, while others can be too malt heavy. It will be one of the best dark beers you will ever have the pleasure of drinking.
How it looks
This beer pours a dark brown with no transparency, some carbonation and a small tan head with good retention.
How it smells
Did your mom ever make blueberry muffins? If so, this beer will send you back. It smells a lot like homemade blueberry muffins. The combination of sweet baking, ripe blueberries, as well as dark chocolate with hints of vanilla and toffee, are scrumptious.
How it tastes
Again, blueberries and chocolate surround your palate. The tart blueberry flavour is sweetened by the dark malt which sequentially reveals other rich flavours such as caramel, brown sugar and espresso. Sometimes fruit profiles in beer can come across as confectioned or synthetic, we love this blueberry is ripe, real and delicious. It is not over-powering, but well integrated with all the other flavours.
