Cannery Brewing is a small brewery in Penticton, British Columbia who has made a mark for themselves crafting beer smack-dab in the middle of wine country. Thornless Blackberry Porter started out many years ago as a one-off seasonal winter beer. Due to its incredible success, they have no been producing this brew for more than ten years. This porter is a welcome change to the standard flavour profiles you would expect from the style and deviates from the traditional coffee and chocolate roast flavours to offer up a brilliantly fruit-forward beer that smells like blackberry blossoms in early summer and tastes like a mouthful of fresh berries. This award-winning beer is created using all-natural blackberry extract and is exceptionally food friendly and proves that goodness crafted in the Okanagan comes from more than just grapes!
This beer pours an inky black with only the faintest hint of amber around the edges. With a good inch of creamy beige head that produces some great lacing.
The aroma is all blackberries up front, with some nice balancing notes of caramel, roasty malt, bittersweet chocolate and coffee. Some earthy hops come through but the star is the blackberries.
A well-executed fruit-porter, this beer offers wonderful flavours of sweet blackberry that dance on the palate with controlled porter flavours beneath showcasing roasted malt, sweet cocoa powder and roasted coffee. A smooth, medium-bodied beer that finishes with some slight acidity and tartness.
Ultra-food friendly and pairs with a vast array of dishes. If you’re thinking savoury, consider slow cooker pulled pork. Or if you’re into the idea of a beer float, grab some locally produced, high-quality vanilla ice cream and top it with this beery berry treat.
