Introduction

When the golden and clean lagers of Plzen (Bohemia) became all the rage in the mid-1800s, München brewers feared that Germans would start drinking the Czech beer over their own. Munich Helles Lager was their stylistic answer to meet the demand for such brews. This style presents itself with more malt characteristics and they often share the same spicy hop characters of Czech Pilsners but with a more subdued approach and with a wonderful balance of malts. Helles is German for bright which is an accurate word to describe this Munich Helles Lager.

How it looks

Pours a cloudy, hazy straw colour with a rocky white head with great retention and lovely lacing.

How it smells

Aromas of tart lemon, light pepper, herbal with a tinge of funk and yeasty earthiness.

How it tastes

Flavours of lemon, crackers and light honey with a light herbal, spicy hop bitterness and a yeasty earthy finish. A medium bodied with medium to high carbonation that finishes clean and crisp. With great complexity and balance, this is a unique take on the style and crisp, clean and refreshing to drink. Don’t expect a big hit of Brett on this beer despite the use of Brett Brux Trois.

Recommended food pairing

Pair this beer with samosas. The savoury filling is nicely complemented by the spicy hop flavours and yeasty earthiness of this Evil Twin brew.
