Description

With over 70 million litres drunk every year worldwide, it is no wonder that it is the largest African brewery. It is Kenya’s flagship beer and has won numerous awards, including gold medals at the 2012 and 2013 Le Monde Selection in Brussels (a fancy international beer competition).  Tusker lager is made by Kenya Breweries in Nairobi, which opened its doors in 1922. The beer first produced was met with mixed reviews, but it slowly gained standing, shifting through Tanzania and other countries in the African Great Lakes region, and soon began to be exported. The name of the beer, “Tusker”, is in memory of one of the company’s founders, George Hurst, who was killed in an elephant hunting accident. The iconic elephant logo on the label continues to act as a national symbol representing integrity, national pride, and of course, great-tasting beer. The beer is brewed from 100% African ingredients that are all locally sourced. The barley is from the Savannah of the Maasai Mara, the spring water hails from the Nyandarua ranges in the Aberdare Mountains and all of the yeast is developed locally in Kenya. Tusker contains a minimum of 50% malted barley, which provides the full-bodied, toasted character.
