Description

The Tofino Brewing Company was opened by three surfer dudes, Bryan O’Malley, Dave McConnell, and Chris Neufeld. The brewery started back in 2011 when the beer rush had just started taking off in British Columbia.  The trio originally started the brewery with the simple concept of making some money, because working on the docks wasn’t cutting it. The learning curve was steep, as the new university graduates had plenty of brains but had zero brewing experience. They were lucky to be in a small town with plenty of help around them. They barely had any money to their name, but little by little, they sourced out their equipment, some from a brewery in Washington, and realized they needed a head brewer to help. Dave Woodward, formerly of Whistler Brewhouse, came on to help.  Sustainability is always at the forefront of the business: they reuse water, send spent grains to farms to be used as feed, and use hydroelectricity instead of propane. Hydroelectricity is great, except when they experience Tofino’s famous storm days and the power goes out; then they take the day off. Tofino residents were ready for a brewpub and from the moment the brewery opened, the support has been non-stop.
