Description
The owners of Hutton & Smith actually started out their respective careers in geology, working in Las Vegas. Moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee, the couple changed their focus to a career shift in the beer sector and in 2015 started the process of building their brand and making beer. The name “Hutton & Smith” comes from the “Father of Modern Geology” James Hutton and the “Father of English Geology” William Strata Smith. By commemorating the two famous figures, it was an ode to their past careers, and it had a historic old-world appeal. The Owners, Joel and Melanie Krautstrunk (Mel overseas front of the house operations and Joel, the back) opened their doors at just the right time: when the craft brew scene was really taking off in the States, and when they opened, they made just a mere 300 barrels of beer at 31 gallons. It wasn’t much, but their popularity grew (especially in the local rock-climbing community which they supported) and they expanded to a larger production facility three years later. The Igneous is their flagship beer and top-selling brew throughout Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. They were named one of the nation’s fastest growing breweries of its type by the Colorado-based Brewers Association in both 2018 and 2019.
