First hit on the nose is a doughy malt with a touch of yeast and a hop profile that is leafy, green with a touch of freshly cut grass. There’s a vinous, white-grape fruity note behind the malt.

The taste follows the nose with a doughy malt hitting the palate, quickly followed by sweet fruit flavour of pear and white grape, and then the hops show up. As it warms on the palate, the hops will deliver freshly turned soil and floral notes that really kick up their volume. Well-balanced flavour, crisp body, and a slightly dry and hoppy finish.

A classic pairing with German pilsner is shellfish, so get the lobster tails and start cracking.

Pours a light golden colour with a cloudy body and low carbonation. A finger’s worth of bubbly foam rests on top.

Deciduous Brewing got on its legs in 2014, when Frank Zagami and a few business partners threw in together. In a short time the brewery has made a name for itself, landing in any number of “Best Of” lists around town and the state. One of the notable programs for the brewery is their fruited sour program, using yeast thought to be lost to the brewing world. Their taproom resides in Newmarket, New Hampshire and is well-worth stopping by to take advantage of their curb-side service. A handful of regulars make up the two dozen different styles available, but many times there’s a seasonal experiment worth grabbing. The Shortlist is a German-style Pilsner using oldschool techniques close to the original “Kellerbier” style. Smooth, cloudy, and rich in taste. Serves well at 10°C and can hang in the cellar up to six months.
