Profile

True North Ale Company launched in 2017 on Boston's North Shore, the rustic town of Ipswich. Reflecting the heritage of the small town, built on a community of fisherman and seaman, their name is an encapsulation of the town’s spirit. A no nonsense place where great beer is exactly what hard working people need. Built by the father and son team of Gary and Jake Rogers, True North took traditional know-how and combined it with cutting edge brewing equipment and quality customer service in their taproom. Their dual-brewing setup lets them put out big numbers on their fan favourite beers but also throw out some seasonal experiments. The North Shore is a hazy IPA built in the American style. A body built on soft, nutty malt allows the more adventurous hops to bring in fruit flavours of peach, apricot, berries, and melon, for an IPA that’s dynamic. Serves well at 8°C and should be cracked open right away.

Look

Pours a light yellow colour with a hazy body and low carbonation. A thin head of white bubbles rests on top of the pour.

Smell

A slightly sour aroma that’s amped up by the mix of sweet, lush fruit aromas. It’s hard to pick out the fruit specified by the brewer, but it comes together in a pleasant fruity nose.

Taste

A much leaner and milder flavour than the nose might have you believe. The body of this beer is very light, so the deeper flavours of the malt vanish fairly quickly. Mostly you’ll taste the sweet fruit with a focus on the melon and apricot. But that’s joined by a slightly green and floral hop kick that helps balance it all out. Quick taste with a slightly dry finish, leaving behind a touch of fruit.

Pairing

A great beer for some Jamaican jerked chicken served with mashed potatoes and greens.
