Profile

Children of the street - Andy Miller, James Dugan, and Paul Reiter met entirely by accident as they roamed the back alleys and by-ways of Portland. Andy and James planted the first seeds of Great Notion when they started talking about home brewing in 2010 - swapping ideas and recipes, eventually working together on their home-brews. Paul had been working on start-up financing and creative enterprise when he ran into the other two once again - they all lived on the same street. In 2014 the nascent idea became a real business, and the craft brewery of Great Notion was finally putting out brews. Now they’ve made hundreds of one-offs and a few fan favourites. Their taproom serves up chilly pints and a tasty menu of classic local fusion foods. Great beer and delicious food - what a Great Notion. The Double Stack is an Imperial Breakfast Stout with a sweet malt informed by coffee and maple flavours, back by a serious kick. Serves well at 10°C and can cellar for up to a year.

Look

Pours black as printer’s ink with a totally occluded body and low carbonation. A thin layer of caramel tinted, creamy foam rests on top of the pour.

Smell

Did someone slide a Coffee Crisp under your nose? You might think so with this beer. The sweet coffee aroma is powerful enough to follow you around the room.

Taste

The flavour follows the powerful nose. The sweet coffee and maple flavours have distance and striking power. Fortunately, there’s an undertone of acidity and bitterness from the coffee beans that helps balance it out. The body is silky smooth without being too full and snaps off at the end with a dry finish. Overall this is a very sweet and powerful beer that will lull you into a much needed nap.

Pairing

Take this one down solo – there’s a lot happening worth savouring.
