Profile

Gabe Fletcher began the Anchorage Brewing Company out of a desire to make craft beer take a step up in the deep north. Starting out in 2010 in the basement of a Brew Pub, Fletcher took just over a year to produce his own beer that kicked the local scene into gear. By 2015, he had one of the best taprooms in Alaska and arguably North America. Restrictions in Alaska’s brewing regulations forced him to bottle brew everything in the early days, but the limitation turned out to be a boon. The more careful brewing requirements resulted in beers that blew the doors off when tasted. And now that he’s running the show the way he wants, he’s expanded into styles that weren’t available in the beginning. Time to taste some of the magic. The Descend is a session IPA - a lower ABV beer that leans into big flavour and easy drinking. Fragrant and full of tropical goodness, this is a perfect session beer. Serves well at 8°C and should be enjoyed right away.

Look

Pours a light straw colour with a hazy body and low carbonation. A thin ring of white bubbles clings to the glass after the pour.

Smell

Lots of tropical fruit on the nose, including pineapple, mango, and a touch of citrus. There’s a sniff of hop tone you can pick up, suggesting flowers and green leaves.

Taste

Quite a mild flavour on this guy, making it tricky to pick up all the goodness. The fruit comes in first but soft and slow, delivering sweet mango and pineapple. The hops come in after, but they never really intrude, giving you some floral qualities and a little lick of stone. Slightly dry mouthfeel and that finishes up in a snappy, dry fashion.

Pairing

Great for nearly anything with some spice and char. Get into a cajun chicken sandwich for lunch with one of these.
