Profile

Field & Forge Brewing Co. has a long history in the Alberta prairies, reaching back to the end of the 19th century. The original source of wheat and barley, founded by the Bilton family over 120 years ago is still in their hands and continues to provide ingredients for their brewery. Local sourcing is a big part of how Field & Forge maintain their commitment to consistency and quality in their beer. Nine year round beers await a fresh pour in the gastro pub, alongside a few seasonals just for the fun of it. If you find yourself heading along the #2 highway near Innisfail, drop in for a drop and a bite. Shirley’s Best is an IPA showcasing the best of the breed with strong citrus notes and floral hops that balance together perfectly. Serves well at 8°C and should be enjoyed soon.

Look

Pours a beautiful gold colour with a clear body and low carbonation. A thick, pillowy head of golden tinted foam pours from the can and hangs around for a while.

Smell

Slightly sweet muddle tropical fruit and a touch of citrus zest mix well with a touch of flowery hops. There’s a bright, vinous aroma to the beer, making your lips smack before you even taste it.

Taste

Fairly mild flavour for an IPA but it comes together in a gentle way that’s tasty. The sweeter elements are very quiet in the taste and you’ll sense the hops coming up as it warms on the tongue, overpowering the rest. They’re a touch bitter and leafy green, tasting of fresh cut roots. The body is smooth with a slight turn toward a dry note on the finish, and it leaves behind a sniff of the leafy hops.

Pairing

Great pairing for a well-stocked charcuterie board full of tasty meats.
