Profile

Old Yale Brewing kicked off their adventure in the craft beer game in 1999 in Chilliwack, B.C. For nearly two decades the crew worked in their small original brewing facility making a name for themselves and sending out delicious craft beer along the coast. But a few years ago they made the jump into an expanded facility, moving into an 11,000 sq. ft. brewing warehouse and opening up new possibilities. Every beer is created on a state-of-the-art system and this follows their vision of a dynamic, new-world brewing attitude that respects the classics but seeks out the boundary of what can be done with hops, malt, and water. Their tap room is a well-appointed restaurant and campfire kitchen well worth making the trip to Chilliwack to enjoy. The West Coast Hazy IPA has everything you need to know packed right into the title. Although considered an East Coast IPA by the letter of the law, the big aromas and juicy hops are all West Coast. Serves well at 8°C and should be enjoyed promptly.

Look

Pours a darker yellow, nearly amber colour with a hazy body and medium carbonation. A frothy head of small bubbles hangs around for a while after the pour.

Smell

Not a lot is happening for the nose to snatch up, you’ll sniff out some light tropical fruit and a touch of floral hops, but the rest hides beneath the waves.

Taste

The flavour follows the nose, offering up only subtle information. The flavour is warm and sweet, almost leaning toward an amber ale, but clearly carrying the sweeter fruit of the IPA. Most of the fruit information is obscured, other than being slightly sweet like melon juice. The hops are very subtle, offering up some floral and herbal texture, but not much else. A great beer for those who want to sample the less radical IPA offerings.

Pairing

The brewer makes a recommendation we can all get behind: break out the cheese platter!
