The Buds 'N' Spuds shows the power of a collaboration between two prairie based craft brewers ain’t nothin’ to poke with a stick. Medicine Hat Brewing Company is made up of the hard working VanCuren family and brewmaster Mitch Dalrymple. A recent player in the prairie craft scene, they’ve made a name with razor sharp classic styles. Pile O' Bones Brewing battles out of Regina, built by the men known as Glenn and Josh after their time in the larger beer industry. In the spirit of hardworking prairie folk, they decided the best way to get great craft beer was to roll up their sleeves and make it happen themselves. These two have come together to make a Pilsner on the backbone of a great prairie staple: Potato. The Buds 'N' Spuds may sound like a mad science experiment but the result is a clean, crisp Pilsner-style beer with refreshing character. Serves well at 8°C and you should get into it right away.

Look

Pours a light yellow colour with a mostly clear body and medium carbonation. A thin pillow of light foam pours from the can but recedes quickly.

Smell

A toasty malt aroma with a touch of sweetness combines with the most obvious thing: potato starch. It’s an earthy and flinty aroma that has some character.

Taste

Quite a bit of bitterness up front but it eases off to allow for the sweeter malt and some earthy, green hops to come up and balance it all. A strong flavour of potato flesh and toasted wheat. Similar in some respects to a wheat ale but it will lean over into the greener, leaf and stem flavour of a strong hops as it warms on the tongue. Finishes up fairly smooth and with little aftertaste.

Pairing

Pair it up with a well adorned cheese board that leans toward the harder options.
