Introduction

If you head into the town of Kelowna, you would do well to stop off at the folks who call themselves Shore Line Brewing, and sample their taps. SLB creates their beers for the locals but welcomes all travelers who need a pint to wash the road dust from their throats. With a slate of a dozen beers, ranging across many different styles, there’s something for every lover of the brew to enjoy. Shore Line also sports a tap-room with artisanal pizza to go along with your pint. Set along the banks of the Okanagan River and ready to offer up a stool or help you get six of your favorites to take home, SLB is worth visiting, but also worth hunting down their delicious beer as it finally heads out of the small town and works its way across the great North. Dead Calm is an Oatmeal Stout with a creamy, rich body, flavours of chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Serves well at 10°C and can cellar for up to a year.

How it looks

Pours black as pitch with very low carbonation. A thin ring of chocolate tinted bubbles lingers around the glass.

How it smells

The toasted malt aroma really dominates this beer, but you can sniff out some of the dusty chocolate notes and caramel in the background.

How it tastes

Quite a mild flavour that really only seems to get into gear after you’ve swallowed. The roasted coffee and roasted oats are up front and personal, the sweeter elements are quite weak. For a stout that boasts of chocolate and caramel this is far less cloying than you might think - it leans a lot on the malt and roasted components, making it more of a dark-roast coffee kind of experience. Smooth body and finish.

Recommended food pairing

Something sweet, even a dessert that has some cream would pair well.
