Introduction

There comes a time when everyone - man, woman, or child - takes a long look at their suit jacket and asks themselves the question - should I go into the office today and stare long into the blinking screen or should I just brew beer for a living? Kieran and Dave decided the time had come to give up the screen and try their hand at making the frosty brew full-time. Gun Hill Brewing Co. was born. Now they run a small crew in the Bronx, producing a full slate of craft beers for locals and fans across the world. Currently there are 8 available styles available in cans, covering the popular styles. Void of Light is a stout, called a “foreign.” This style was classically made for travel and was bolstered with a high level of alcohol. Strongly malted with classic stout flavouring, this beer is well served at 10°C and can cellar for over a year.

How it looks

Pours black as pitch and with mild carbonation. A bit of foam out of the can will ease down to basically nothing, leaving only a thin ring around the glass.

How it smells

Classic stout footprint in the aroma but it leans more heavily toward the toasted grain than the coffee - which is still present - and the sweetness you might expect gives way to a bitter dark chocolate whiff.

How it tastes

All the expectations of the stout family, but this beer follows the nose, leaning more toward the toasted grain than the coffee and chocolate. In fact, the chocolate is all but gone on the palate, and a combination of toasted barley and slightly bitter coffee beans takes over most of the flavour. It eases off after the initial hit of grain, mellowing into a slightly bitter version of the stout you know and love. Very characterful.

Recommended food pairing

If you’re feeling bold, pair up the stout with a Yorkshire pudding. If that’s too out there, prime rib with greens would be tasty.
