Introduction

Newfoundland has been no stranger to culinary and brewing ingenuity, but over the past twenty years, a renaissance of craft brewing has spread across the islands. Brewpubs have popped up relying on ingredients sourced from the locale. One such brewery has recently enjoyed its 25th anniversary, and now you get to taste what close to three decades of local brewing has to offer. Quidi Vidi Brewery is located on the water and sports a full slate of beers available on tap and in cans. QV has been making beer since 1996, having converted a former fish plant into their brewing facility. The brewery also rocks a collection of choice clothing merchandise for the discerning beer drinker who needs to get their hands on the elusive “t-shirt”. The Dayboil is a session IPA with big hop flavours but a low ABV, making it ideal for sipping on the patio while having a delicious pub burger or fish and chips. Serves well at 8°C and should be enjoyed promptly.


How it looks

Pours light orange colour with a semi-clear body and light carbonation. A thick head of white foam out of the can will get thin and clingy quite quickly.

How it smells

Funky and green leap out of the can and punch your face. A fragrant hop profile that is green but has some dynamism to it - earthy, chlorophyll, sweet leaf, and some wet earth. Way in the back is a sweet melon aroma.

How it tastes

A fascinating combination of sharp, bitter hops that taste like chewing on roots and a hit of shallot or garlic (tough to nail down). This happens upfront of the taste, and it shifts gears quickly from that strong flavour down into a more laid back leafy bitterness with a touch of muddled tropical fruit flavour. The leafy part will stay in your mouth until you have your next sip, whether that’s ten seconds or minutes.

Recommended food pairing

Sharp flavour but all in the high-end, so get into something meaty and fatty. No need to go straight carnivore - toro sushi or maguro would be a nice combo.
