Introduction
Four Winds Brewing Company is just a small brewery (that is steadily growing) that’s making a big impact on the Canadian brewing scene. These guys just keep winning award-after-award and are continu- ously producing interesting, complex and well-crafted brews. They sell their beer within BC nearly as fast as they can craft it, which makes its availability in the rest of the country incredibly limited. Small amounts are beginning to be seen in Alberta, but being the fans that we are of this brewery, we want to be sure to share their good wares with all our members are often as possible.
How it looks
Pours a clear, medium golden colour with three fat fingers of puffy, loosely foamy and very bubbly bone- white head, which lazily fades away to leave some layered cloud lacing.
How it smells
Dominant aromas of tropical fruit lead the nose with some soft, dank, pine resin and bright citrus melding with muddled stone fruit and grainy pale malt. Earthy yeast and leafy grassy green hop bitters round out the nose.
How it tastes
Predominant flavours of ethereal and bright tropical fruit notes combine with juicy citrus, showcasing strong grapefruit flavours and a touch of pine. Mid-palate there is some sweetness that comes through from the crack- er-y, grainy malt to create balance, which is rounded out with some grassy hop flavours. This medium-bodied and light IPA has an average carbonation and nice frothiness that finishes with a pleasant lingering bitterness from the hops. A stellar west coast ISA that drinks much like a solid IPA with a lighter alcohol kick, which allows more of this enjoyable liquid to be consumed. Hopheads will barely notice the change in mouth feel and there is enough interest in the hop profile to detract from the lighter ABV.
Recommended food pairing
With the beer being brewed right beside the BC coast, we suggest you pair this ISA with some fresh BC sea- food, which complements the citrus, and fruit flavours in this brew very nicely.
