Profile

Sloop Brewing began when Adam Watson and Justin Taylor got together a small self-brewing setup, preparing beer and selling it at the local farmer’s markets of the Hudson Valley. Success has come quickly for the duo, with the opening of a production facility in 2014 and then their brew-pub opening in the abandoned IBM plant at East Fishkill in 2018. The pair named their company for the boats that moved up and down the Hudson, ferrying people and trade goods, which led to the explosive growth of the east coast. In the same spirit, their brewing talents connect people and business now, and their beer is spreading across the country. With over a dozen craft beers, many of them part of a unique brew series, Sloop is putting out quality that crosses all styles and tastes. This “bomb” mixes the stylings of two hops from wildly different parts of the world to create a fruity, resinous pale ale collaboration. Serves well at 8°C and you should probably jump into it as soon as time allows.

Look

Pours a light yellow with a downright murky body and low carbonation. A thin smattering of bubbles on top but not much of a head.

Smell

The combination of delightful, piney hops and subtle, muddled tropical fruit is quite pleasant, but good luck picking out any fruits specifically. A touch of citrus on the back.

Taste

More subtle in flavour than you might expect. The hops deliver on the promise of the nose, giving you a mild pine hop profile and a touch of muddled fruit. There’s low bitterness that helps cut down on the flat malt, but allow some of its sweetness through for a well-rounded overall flavour. Slightly astringent finish will leave you smacking your lips.

Pairing

Good for spice, but the bitterness is tame, so don’t get too crazy. Street tacos and some Cholula? Yes.
