Together with the Just Here For Beer radio show, Russell Brewing has produced a beer specifically to support Pink Shirt Day - an awareness campaign on the issue of Bullying. Cracking open the “Be A Buddy Not A Bully” is part of supporting the development of healthy self-esteem for all children. This type of community outreach is precisely how Russell Brewing uses beer to make a better community, and anybody is welcome to join them. Russell Brewing has been going since 1995, making 100% natural beer with no preservatives, having produced nearly 200 different beers in their time. The Be A Buddy Not A Bully is an American-style lager with bold flavours of floral, earthy hops and sweet malt, dry-hopped with a touch of Czech Saaz. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to six months, but we say why not crack it now?
Look
Pours a pale, yellow colour with mostly clear body and light carbonation. A thin cap of small, white bubbles floats on top of the glass.
Smell
Light and sweet toasted biscuit malt mixes with a slightly funky yeasty aroma for a nose that lights up the senses. The aroma turns toward stone fruit, but only barely, overall an elusive scent.
Taste
Quite a mild flavour for such an odd smelling beer. A touch of the biscuit malt, sweet and smooth, but then the funk shows up. It’s very mild, giving off an aroma like slightly rotten plums, but nothing unpleasant, just a mild perfume. Mouthfeel is fairly smooth but trends to the dry side after the swallow. No real aftertaste to speak of, mild and interesting.

Time to light up the BBQ and grill some chicken with potato salad on the side.
