Profile

Smell

The sweet toasted biscuit malt dominates the nose but if you dig deep enough you can pull out some loamy earthy aroma, a touch of sizzling yeast, and the smell of wet rye.

Taste

Quite a mild flavour for an amber-like beer. If you’ve had this one in the fridge for a while, let it warm up a touch to get more out of it. A bit of warmth will coax out the sweet bread malt and some of the snazzy yeast. But all in all this is a very mild beer that will show up on the tongue and quickly head out the door. Take your time and enjoy the subtleties but you may find yourself reaching for a 2nd can of bigger flavour afterward. Pleasant but quiet.

Pairing

Great beer for a classic cottage pie - piping hot from the oven.

Sight

Pours a dark amber colour with a slightly murky body and low carbonation. A frothy, bubbly head of foam out of the can has some staying power and stickiness, but does eventually fade away.

Description

The team at East Brother Beer Company are all about representing the pride and purpose of their community and in turn, their brewery. They live in a scrappy part of California where the farming and industry has always been a down to earth attitude, and no amount of time or technology entering into the state has touched that. Since they opened their doors they’ve continued to make simple, straight-forward beers that are meant for drinking on the back of a patio as the light of the warm summer sun fades over the back of the hills. They’ve got five year-round beers on the slate, with a handful of seasonal beers released around the calendar. They limit their shipping to within California, so getting them up into the frozen north is a real treat. Crack open the handiwork of some dedicated coastal people and sip on all its glory. The Red Lager is an amber lager that relies on mixed malt at the start of it all to deliver a darker, smoother beer with a mild hop profile. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to a year.
