Profile

Smell

Tons of funk at the front end of the nose, but the plums are strong enough to sniff out, along with a hint of earthy hops in the background.

Taste

The funky snappy flavour is going to overwhelm your palate at the start, but it eases off and lets some of the other flavours into the party. The plums are rich and sweet, the pluots have vinous qualities that mix it all up, and the base of the ale is strong. The farmhouse flavours show up after everything else eases up, tasting of leather and straw. Finishes up sticky and lip smacking.

Pairing

Something simple and tasty off the grill like a juicy chicken breast or new york strip and simple tossed greens.

Sight

Pours the colour of blood oranges with a hazy body and low carbonation. A thin layer of frizzy bubbles tops the glass fading off to a memory.

Description

Founded in 2011, Almanac Beer Co. is the handiwork of two home-brewers, Damian Fagan and Jesse Friedman. The duo set out to produce beers using the rich, diverse ingredients of California, using classic styles. Their first beer, a bottle-conditioned Belgian-style golden ale, was sold out of a car trunk, but from humble beginnings came wild success. A slow release of quality craft beers grew into a going concern within 2 years, and by 2013 Almanac was a full-time gig. 2020 saw the company moving into their new 30,000 sq.ft. production facility in San Francisco Bay. Larger production allowed them to make some of their dream beers finally come true - barrel-aged sours, wild stouts, hazy IPAs, and more. The Farmer’s Reserve Plum is a fruited sour heavy on the funk and plum aromas. The taste delivers the promise of all good sour ales with some unique depth of flavour. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for six months.
