Profile

When Patrick Rue founded The Bruery over a decade ago, he vowed never to brew an IPA. But the style became savagely popular, and the brewing crew knew they could make a top-notch entry (or perhaps many....) The beers of Offshoot are fresh, juicy, and almost entirely based around IPAs (with the occasional experiment thrown in the mix.) All of them are designed around the hop-forward idea and the quality expected in California’s craft beer game these days. They’ve produced over 30 different varieties, available in six pack form and are beginning to be available wherever your mouth happens to be. Cruising is a cold-fermented IPA using a medley of hops to provide hearty tropical fruit aromas and dynamic flavour with a refreshing kick on the palate. Serves well at 6°C or 10°C and should be enjoyed promptly.

Look

Pours a pale honey colour with a slightly hazy body and low carbonation. Not much head aside from a few stray bubbles ringing the glass.

Smell

A fairly subtle aroma comes out of this beer, you’ll pick up some of the fruit medley, and there will be some hops hiding in the back giving off a slightly floral and leafy quality. All of it is subtle and tough to pull out.

Taste

Quite mild in flavour. There’s the mixture of fruit that’s muddled and mostly a broad, sweet taste. You’ll pick up some of those shy hops in the floral flavour, but they don’t advertise too heavily. The mouthfeel is mostly smooth with a slightly dry finish. A pleasant drinking IPA that gains some character if you let it warm a touch.

Pairing

Get into something spicy with some grill pork to soften the sharpness. Say hello to Pho.
