Introduction

Founded in 1995, Bear Republic Brewing Company became a staple in Northern California and then spread the greatness far and wide. After a decade of success, they opened up more brewing in Cloverdale and pushed their market out of the west. Bear Republic is built on the philosophy of efficient, straight-forward brewing that creates straight-forward, delicious beer. And they credit their success to the people who have worked with them, volunteered at events, and supported their expansions over the years. A community of beer loving people, working together for success. Racer 5 is an IPA that has won more than its fair share of awards since being released nearly 25 years ago. Bold citrus and tropical fruit flavours, and pleasant floral hops. Serves well at 8°C and you should crack it open pronto.

How it looks

Pours a bright yellow with a mostly clear body and light carbonation. A thin layer of pillowy foam rests on top of the glass.

How it smells

A tug of war between spicy, piney hops and a lovely, punchy grapefruit aroma with tingly zest. A touch of funkiness and slightly sweet malt underneath the chaos.

How it tastes

The hops win the tug-o-war on the palate. The combination of herbal, spicy, and resin make for a dynamic hop flavour, and there’s enough of the fruit playing on the tongue to keep it all from turning acrid. Slightly astringent but fairly smooth mouthfeel, and the whole flavour experience hits hard and then fades away. All that’s left behind is a slightly leafy aftertaste and the desire for another sip.

Recommended food pairing

Anything fried will be your friend, especially if it has some tangy, creamy dipping sauce.
