Blood Orange Witbier
Origin: Arvada, CO
Style: Blood Orange Witbier
Along the lesser traveled roads of Colorado, you’ll eventually find yourself in the small town of Arvada. Put on the map during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of the mid-19th century, Arvada enjoyed a small explosion of popularity before settling down, but there’s still gold to be found there. In the core of Olde Town Arvada is where you’ll find the main location of New Image Brewing, and the gold flows from their taps into pint glasses. Around 2015, their doors opened and they became a local spot for well made craft beers in the west coast style. New Image is all about busting the old paradigm of musty beer drinkers, who enjoy nothing but hoppy and malty old-world styles. They aim to make their beers delicious and fun, because how else are you going to get either of those things? The Moped is a classic Witbier with the twist of blood orange in the brew. The result is a “white beer” with the typical strong wheat malt, balanced by the sweet fruit rather than spices. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for six months.
Pours a pale yellow colour with a clear body and low carbonation. Next to no head forms on the beer after the pour.
The strength of the wheat malt almost entirely drowns out the fruit and anything else, but in the background you can get a sense of the orange zest.
On the palate, you can catch more of the blood orange than was available on the nose. But the strength of the malt is still powerful enough to be the star of the show. The two balance each other into a slightly mild wheat flavour with citrus zest around the edges and a touch of funkiness. The flavour is fast and leaves an aftertaste of grain.
Something slightly sweet to help bring out the fruit, like sweet-chili stir fry, would do well.
