Introduction

R&B Brewing Co. has been putting out the quality microbrews in East Vancouver since the late 1990s. Starting out as a small operation in 1997, Barry Benson and Rick Dellow have grown over the years, creating a brewpub worthy of some travel. And at the same time they’ve upped their output and broadened out the slate of beers. Since starting they’ve brewed more than 150 beers and they keep 14 of their best works on tap for the thirsty traveller to enjoy. Now you can try some of their work with the Stolen Bike Lager - an unpasteurized, European-style Pilsner with a little hop twist courtesy of West Coast brewing tactics. Golden in colour, dynamic in flavour with grassy, smoky, spicy character. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar in the fridge for up to six months.

How it looks

Pours a light golden colour with a clear body and medium carbonation. A thin cap of bubbly foam rests on top.

How it smells

Aromas of grain, bready malts, crackers, wet grass, and the hops throw in a touch of fresh leafiness and wet earth.

How it tastes

The flavours are standard Pilsner but with a bit more of the hop in it to keep you wondering. Strong grain and bread malt backbone, a little bit of sweeter toasted cracker-like flavours, and then the hops step in with the grassy taste and some green leaves. There’s a bit of the hot-breath booziness that comes through, but at this low ABV that’s likely more of a tannin emerging from the combination of the malt and hops. This also lends to the dry finish.

Recommended food pairing

Good with any pub food but would make a plate of nachos stand out.
