Introduction

Born from a rebellious spirit, Garrison Brewing was launched on the north-end of Nova Scotia at a time when craft beer was in what seemed to be death throes. In 1997, the crew of Garrison fought against the dying of the light by releasing an Irish Red Ale and Nut Brown Ale that were well received. A handful of other odd niche beers came out of the brewery and when 2004 rolled around, the craft scene was beginning its next renaissance and rise. The scrappy Garrison needed to move into a bigger facility to accommodate their success - the new facility was a breath of air to a flickering flame and the brewery kicked into an expansion. They built a custom brewhouse and Garrison has grown to become a powerhouse of maritime craft brewing. Garrison’s Irish Red Ale celebrates the strong history of Irish people in Halifax. Built on a smooth malt base with warm flavours and mixed malt character, the Red Ale is meant to comfort and satisfy. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to six months.

How it looks

Pours an amber colour with medium carbonation and a clear body. A thin ring of small bubbles forms around the top of the glass.

How it smells

A truly mild nose on this beer - you’ll pick up faint notes of warm, toasted malt and caramel sweetness, a touch of stone fruit, and a light herbal hop profile.

How it tastes

The flavour brightens up from the milder aroma. The inviting malt fills the palate with sweet caramel and toasted grain, a touch of stone fruit and fall spices, and the hops give some fresh herbal flavours to offset the sweetness. The body is thinner than you’d expect, but smooth in the mouth and still satisfying. Easy to drink and mild in the aftertaste.

Recommended food pairing

Pair it up with the best pub food you’ve got available. Beef dip cannot be beat.
