Introduction

Epic Brewing is a bold step forward in Utah’s brewing scene - the first brewery since prohibition to produce high-alcohol beers. Being under that scrutiny, Epic has made it their business to produce hand crafted, small-batch beers in a wide variety. Using techniques and styles from the US and Europe, Epic aims to fill their slate with all the popular styles, done well and made to be savoured. Since 2010 Epic has grown to produce a handful of permanent beers, and an awesome rotation schedule of new styles. To be truly Epic in a singular space, the work has to be uncompromising and meet the highest standards - have a taste and discover an Epic vision of craft beer. The Munich Mayhem is a Märzen-style lager, meaning it’s modelled after a classic German spring-time lager that was commonly served at Oktoberfest before the contemporary version replaced it. Serves well at 8°C and can stay in the cellar for six months to a year.

How it looks

Pours a dark amber, leaning toward a light brown colour with a fairly murky body, and low carbonation. A smattering of large bubbles on the top of the glass is the only indication of head.

How it smells

A strong aroma of malt with bready qualities and a sweet, almost burnt caramel smell. There’s a faint aroma of the hops around the edges but it’s hard to locate.

How it tastes

The malt is first up on the palate, delivering the bread and biscuit flavours along with the caramel malt that is sweeter and without any hint of singe that the smell might suggest. The hops provide for a touch of loamy earth flavour and a hint of green leaves, but with no bitterness to speak of. Smooth and easy drinking with almost no after taste, it’s no mystery this was served in the beer halls.

Recommended food pairing

Bangers and mash with caramelized onions would be a heavenly combination.
