Introduction

Working from the middle of the table-top, District Brewing Co. is a small, Regina-based brewer of craft beers. Despite being a smaller setup, they produce a wide array of styles that runs the gamut and satisfies the palate of all beer drinkers. Sourcing their material locally and aiming at classic styles, District has produced some impressive results from traditional methods. But they’re not afraid to break away from tradition where it makes sense, using updated tech and new combinations of malt or hops. They have master brewer Mbaku Hamidu Admau to thank for their innovation and quality. If you’re passing through Regina, stop by and grab a pint directly from their hands. The Englishish is based on the idea of the Old English IPA from before there were cars on the road. Made with modern hops but old school techniques, a modern take on classic brewing is here. Light, unfiltered, refreshing - serves well at 8°C and you should probably drink it now.

How it looks

Pours pale yellow colour with a slightly hazy body and low carbonation. A cap of small, sticky bubbles forms a head on the beer.

How it smells

The aroma is a smattering of hops all crashing together, leafy and earthy, floral and piney, with a complement of grapefruit and lemon zest. Way in the back you can small the bready malts and a snap of yeast.

How it tastes

The taste follows the nose but the hops unify a bit better on the palate. The earthy, pine resin taste is up front and dynamic, but as the beer warms you get a touch of floral to balance it out. There’s a solid foundation of bready, caramel malt to keep things even, and the yeasty side of things helps liven up your tongue. Medium-bodied and fairly smooth, the flavour chops off and has a bitter finish.

Recommended food pairing

It’s traditional IPA time - if you aren’t eating a cottage pie, what are you even doing?
