Old Yale Brewing kicked off their adventure in the craft beer game in 1999 in Chilliack, B.C. For nearly two decades the crew worked in their small original brewing facility making a name for themselves and sending out delicious craft beer along the coast. But a few years ago they made the jump into an expanded facility, moving into an 11,000 sq. ft. brewing warehouse and opening up new possibilities. Every beer is created on a state-of-the-art system and this follows their vision of a dynamic, new-world brewing attitude that respects the classics but seeks out the boundary of what can be done with hops, malt, and water. Their tap room is a well-appointed restaurant and campfire kitchen well worth making the trip to Chilliwack to enjoy. The Kviek Hazy is a Pale Ale with subtle citrus notes and dry-hopped with a boatload of hops for juicy fruit notes and an evolving flavour on the palate. Serves well at 8°C and should be enjoyed promptly.
Pours a cloudy straw colour with a hazy body and low carbonation. A thin layer of small bubbles rests on top of the glass.
Muddled tropical fruit aromas with a strong leaning toward pineapple and a mix of hop characteristics that can be tough to tease apart on the nose. Leafy and floral with a sharp citrus edge.
For as big as the aroma hits, the flavour is much subtler and lovely. A strong push of tropical fruit down the middle of the taste, leaning heavily on the mango. It’s sweet and it helps to tame the hops down, which are a bit difficult to pin to any one flavour but they are stronger in the floral department as it warms on your tongue. Overall this is a much sweeter, fruitier beer than you’re likely to expect and it’s a pleasant, patio drinking experience.
Any fresh caught seafood from the coast is a perfect friend to this beer.
