The prairie bound brewery of Medicine Hat Brewing Company has only been getting the golden drink into eager hands for slightly more than four years, but has already distributed more than two dozen beers. Made up of the hard working VanCuren family and brewmaster Mitch Dalrymple, MH Brewing is spreading their wings to deliver beer across Canada and now down into the U.S. The brewery originally opened its doors in 1912, but was shut down when the temperance movement came into power in North America. The VanCuren family brought it back online in 2012 with fresh new tech but the same tradition of great beer brewed with locally sourced materials. The Light & Bright is a Munich Helles, a style that was made to compete with the dominant Pilsner style, and this beer follows suit. Fuller in body and a touch sweeter, the Helles is a great style for Surf N’ Turf and coastal dishes. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for six months.
Pours a pale yellow colour with a clear body and light carbonation.
This beer has a pretty subtle nose and most of what you’re going to detect is the slightly sweet malt riding along with a faint touch of leafy hops.
Light in body and slightly vinous in flavour, the Light & Bright has a bit of an edge for a Helles. The overall flavour is slightly bitter and sweet, leaning toward white grape juice with a subtle leafy, green hop profile. The flavour lands and is gone in a flash, so take a little time on the tongue to have it sink in. Slightly dry finish and overall a pleasant, snappy finishing beer.
The brewer recommends shellfish and we can’t pass up a good Surf N’ Turf.
