Fahr Beer is the product of one mind - the brewing passion of Jochen Fahr. A student from Ebringen, Germany, Fahr studied Biotechnology in Calgary starting in 2008. After building an automated brewing system at home (and yes we are aware this sounds like the back story of a mad scientist), Fahr won several medals in homebrewing. It was time, in his estimation, to take this show up to the big leagues. Brauerei Fahr was created in 2015 and full-time brewing began. With recipes based on beers from his homeland, but with his own flair, Fahr has established himself as a craft brewing phenom in Turner Valley, Alberta. The Doppelbock is made in the classic German style, powerful and rich tasting. Doppelbock typically has a strong malt flavour, this is no exception, and because of the smooth and sweet nature of the beer it goes well with a lot of grilled and roasted meals. A great beer for a night of feasting. Serves well at 10°C and can cellar up to a year.
Pours a dark brown colour that’s nearly completely occluded with light carbonation. A thin ring of amber-tinted foam around the edge of the glass.
An interesting combination on the nose of sweet malt and caramel qualities, and then a roasted coffee and toasted biscuit around the edges.
Dark and earthy right from the first taste. The malt is slightly sweet but also delivers on a touch of coffee bean, sweet tobacco, and a freshly turned loam that gives it a unique character. That all turns fairly quick on the palate, moving toward a slightly bitter and astringent mouth feel. All that’s left behind is the slight flavour of black tea. This beer hits quickly and then disappears, so take your time sipping it to get all the richness from the experience.
