Introduction

There’s a sea of wheat and a long highway when you head to the ‘Current. Saskatchewan is a place of history and old world methods. But it’s also a place of old world superstition. The Black Bridge is a well-known landmark near the town of Swift Current, and when Clayton and Kari Stenson took their home brewing operation up a notch to full-time, they decided to name it after a place rich in stories of ghosts, history, childhood adventure, and tradition. Black Bridge Brewery has some of its own ghost stories and history, along with long nights getting brews off the line and into the hands of thirsty beer lovers. Four year-round beers and a handful of seasonal offerings populate their slate. The Cold Pressed Cream Ale was made with coffee beans and low hops for a laid back, smooth style of Blonde ale with the soul of a fresh brewed cup of java. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to six months.

How it looks

Pours a clear straw yellow colour with low carbonation and a fairly clear body. A thin cap of small, frothy bubbles forms on the top of the glass.

How it smells

A combination of earthy coffee grounds and a lighter, sweeter floral aroma that you would think couldn’t mix, but it does and it’s interesting.

How it tastes

A wild ride on the palate that has the characteristics of a darker, coffee porter slammed together with the frizzy, excited flavours light IPA. But there’s not much in the way of bitterness from the IPA style - it’s got a sweet, floral flavour from that side and dark roasted character from the darker side. This is a tricky beer to pin down but it’s got high energy and fascinating flavours.

Recommended food pairing

Maybe just let this one happen by itself - there’s a lot going on to process.
