Introduction

If you decided to hide a beer brewing project from your parents in the basement of the local community centre, you would be emulating the somewhat secretive and bare-bones operation of the Nost Brewing Project. A spin-off from the Oozlefinch Beer & Blending facility in Hampton, Virginia, the stated goal of the project is pretty straight forward: deceptively simple beer made to perfection. We’re not claiming the elves or kobolds sneak out of the floorboards at night and make this beer, but we can’t be entirely certain they don’t. The Nost project has yielded 14 beers thus far and now there are two of them on the Canada Craft Club docket - so it’s time for you to crack these beers and bust the whole secret wide open. The Lady is a Hefeweizen ale, a style of German wheat-beer with a smooth body and fruity flavour. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar up to a year in the beer fridge.

How it looks

Pours a pale yellow colour with a cloudy body and low carbonation. A thin ring of bubbles around the glass forms the head.

How it smells

The classic sweet banana aroma is here and it is delicious. It mixes with a spicy, dusty clove aroma and a touch of candy floss sweetness.

How it tastes

The sweetness is up front and personal, but it eases off the banana part of it, coming off as just a slightly sweet malt flavour. There’s a touch of spiciness in the mix with that, so it doesn’t get cloying. There’s some floral hop characteristics floating around and a touch of doughy bread. The taste is fast and the mouthfeel turns from smooth to dry like lightning. Pleasant, easy drinking, and full-bodied.

Recommended food pairing

Smooth and sweet, match this beer up with some grilled meat and sautéed veggies.
