Introduction

Vaycay Brew Co. aims to deliver the vibe of the holiday with every can you crack open. Sipping the Weekender or their Italian pilsner - Vezpa - is meant to transport you to distant lands where great adventure, delicious food, and tasty drinks await. There is no mystery to this desire, as the brewery is located in Calgary, and while it’s pretty nice (we’re here!) It's not an Italian villa or tropical destination. So even better for all of us to be carried away on the flavour and experience of a great beer. Vaycay has opened up a taproom on the Currie Barracks in Calgary, inspired by the beach-side bars of Havana and serving up good food and great beer for all. With fifteen beers on the slate, this may be a true destination after all. The Vezpa is an Italian-style Pilsner - lean and crisp, refreshing on a warm day and perfect for the patio. It’s a subtle beer and could stand to warm a touch to get everything out of it. Serve at 10°C and enjoy at your leisure.

How it looks

Pours a pale straw colour with a clear body and low carbonation. A healthy amount of small bubble foam on top will slowly creep away as you enjoy it.

How it smells

There’s really only one thing you’re going to get from the aroma of this beer: a slightly sweet grain malt aroma. There’s almost nothing else there.

How it tastes

This is a very mild beer on the palate, quite pleasant, and smooth - but if you were expecting the flavour to knock you off your chair, you’ll be disappointed. There’s a light, slightly sweet grain malt flavour, and a hint of earthy, dry soil. Other than that you’ll only get a hint of the classic pilsner flavour and it’ll be gone very quick. An easy drinking beer and would be great on a sunny patio.

Recommended food pairing

Almost anything will go with this, but the flavours are delicate, so don’t drown it out with anything too spicy or saucy.
