Dandy Brewing is one of Calgary’s biggest craft brew success stories. There are more than a few operations that have kicked into gear in the past ten years, but Dandy has set itself apart through a consistent program of marque beers and a tight taproom experience that has tasty food to match their 20 tap selection. It’s been seven years since four buddies — Derek, Dylan, Ben, and Matt — used the changes in the craft beer legislation in Alberta to launch their vision. Dandy got running just as Calgary’s craft scene stepped on the gas and headed into light speed. Only a handful of beers remain on the permanent slate, while the lads spend their time coming up with fresh ideas and new angles on classic styles. Just Play It Loud is a wheat beer or Hefeweizen, producing a cloudy beer with a fruity character. Often low in bitterness, and this particular wheat beer has moderate alcohol. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to a year.
Pours a light golden colour with a slightly cloudy body and light carbonation. A thin ring of white bubbles clings to the glass.
A strong aroma of overripe bananas, dusty cloves, sweet confectioner’s sugar, citrus notes, leafy hops, and freshly turned earth.
The flavour of this beer leans heavily on the fruit character and light spices. The hops are earthy and fresh, green leaves but they’re hiding way in the background. The citrus notes and malt give the beer a strong foundation, but the fruit tends to drown out much of the rest of the taste. Finishes off slowly with the fruit sticking to your palate.
A perfect pairing with piping hot Fish and Chips.
