Introduction

A bold collaboration between the prairie bound brewery of Medicine Hat Brewing in Alberta and Moon Under Water brewpub in Victoria, British Columbia. Medicine Hat Brewing Company has only been getting the golden drink into eager hands for slightly more than four years, but has already distributed more than two dozen beers. Made up of the hard working VanCuren family and brewmaster Mitch Dalrymple, MH Brewing is spreading their wings to deliver beer across Canada and now down into the U.S. Moon Under Water is a small brewing concern working to produce beers based on traditional European brewing styles. These two breweries have come together to make the Coast to Prairie ESB. Extra Special Bitters are a classic style with slightly more aggressive hop profiles than normal for a European beer. Tending toward darker body and flavours that are malty and fruity, ESBs are always about drinkability. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to a year.

How it looks

Pours a dark golden colour verging on amber with a clear body and low carbonation. A thin ring of small bubbles around the glass is all the head you’ll get.

How it smells

Strong malt character right out of the gate, toasted oats and warm caramel mix it up with muddled fruit aroma and way in the background you’ll pick up on some fresh, leafy green aroma.

How it tastes

A very flashy taste profile, it comes and goes quickly so make sure to pay attention and let it warm on the table a touch. Malty and slightly sweet from the start, those flavours ease off to let the hoppier character come forward. The hops are leafy and fresh green with a touch of minerality and earthy loam. Well balanced and easy drinking, this is a smooth beer and we wouldn’t say no to another pint.

Recommended food pairing

Perfect for a roast beef sandwich on sourdough bread, served with potato salad.
