Introduction

Three buddies making hobby beer in the off hours from work may not sound like the beginning of an epoch, but every great success story begins where you least expect it. Rob Burns, Mike O’Mara, and Michael Oxton were just keeping themselves occupied and making some tasty brew in a garage in Somerville, Massachusetts in 2007. It would take five more years for the dice to finally stop rolling, but when they did, the trio had moved their garage setup to a proper warehouse and launched Night Shift Brewing. Long evenings after working hard were complemented with more hard work and the result is a success of flagship hoppy beers, multiple limited releases and series. Proper brewery with proper fans. That’s what long nights can get done. The Nite Lite is a light lager, with a bready aroma and easy drinking style. Crisp, clean, and refreshing. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to six months.

How it looks

Pours a pale yellow colour with a slightly murky body and medium carbonation. A thin ring of foamy suds around the glass is all the head there will be.

How it smells

Aroma of doughy malt with a slightly sweet note of corn mash, a kick of citrus zest leaning toward lime, and a light aroma of hops like freshly cut grass.

How it tastes

The citrus opens the flavour on this beer, giving it some liveliness. The malt and hops come up as it warms on the tongue and the whole taste unifies into what you’d expect of a lager: crisp and slightly malty right down the middle of the palate. Light body with a touch of dry mouthfeel and finishes up with a malty aftertaste.

Recommended food pairing

The Nite Lite was almost specifically designed to pair up with a pub burger and fries. Don’t deny destiny.
