Newfoundland has been no stranger to culinary and brewing ingenuity, but over the past twenty years, a renaissance of craft brewing has spread across the islands. Brewpubs have popped up relying on ingredients sourced from the locale. One such brewery has recently enjoyed its 25th anniversary, and now you get to taste what close to three decades of local brewing has to offer. Quidi Vidi Brewery is located on the water and sports a full slate of beers available on tap and in cans. QV has been making beer since 1996, having converted a former fish plant into their brewing facility. The brewery also rocks a collection of choice clothing merchandise for the discerning beer drinker who needs to get their hands on the elusive “t-shirt”. Aloha is a sour IPA, taking the classic east-coast style of pale ale and throwing in a curve. The combination of tropical tastes with the funky, sour hit will wake up your taste buds. Serves well at 6°C and can cellar up to six months.
Pours a deep, golden colour with a clear body and light carbonation. Only a thin layer of small bubbles form a head out of the can.
A tasty combination of flowery, earthy hop perfume in the foreground and sweet fruit in the background. Under it all is the tingly yeast of the sour hit.
This beer is the perfect combination of slight bitter, flowery hop, with the sweetness of muddled fruits and lively action of the funky sour effects. It’s sweet, balanced with earthiness and your palate gets kicked awake by the sour so you don’t miss any of the action. One of the milder sours as well, so easy to drink and enjoy all that’s going on, without feeling overwhelmed.
A solid combination to go with fatty food: get into a well-marbled pork chop or even the fattier fish on the sushi menu.
