Introduction

Longwood Brewpub is a hallmark destination of Nanaimo, B.C. Looking over the Vancouver Island mountain range, it would be easy to think that the location was the star of the show, but you’d be forgetting to order up one of their awesome craft beers from the taps. Longwood is emblematic of an attitude in most of the British Columbia craft scene - creating their beers in a sustainable way using locally sourced ingredients. And Longwood makes sure not to filter their beers, so they can retain all the natural tastiness of the B.C. lands. Started in 2015, Longwood is now starting to make a name for itself across all of Canada, as their lineup of classic styles appeals to beer lovers of every stripe. The Steam Punk is a classic Dunkel, a wheat beer with sophisticated malt and low bitterness. Dunkel has an interesting combination of spices and sweet fruit flavours. Serves well at 8°C and can cellar for up to six months.

How it looks

Pours a dark, amber colour with a slightly occluded body and low carbonation. A thin cap of fine, off-white bubbles pours from the can.

How it smells

A rich and sweet malt aroma up top, warm caramel and freshly toasted bread. There’s a backbone of clove and pepper, with a bit of flowery perfume.

How it tastes

A tasty combination of the sweet malt character and the spices. The first impression of this beer is like warm, spiced wine, but the sharper edges of the hop come in to give it back its beer character and drive home the Dunkel experience. Sweet, spicy, delicious, and easy to quaff - this is a great beer for sitting next to a big fire and letting the cool of the evening descend.

Recommended food pairing

Any grilled meat would be good, but a ribeye with a quick sear would be delightful. Maybe throw on some grilled asparagus with it, just for fun.
