Introduction

Many years of working hard, picking up skills, and building friendships resulted in the launch of Sea Change Brewery in 2017. Edmonton, and Alberta in general, has benefitted from this award winning crew, adding value to the craft beer scene in the West. But for all they’ve pulled off, the crew at Sea Change are still dedicated to a simple principle: creating unpretentious, delicious beers that everyone can enjoy. Half a dozen full-time beers make their home on the slate, along with a handful of seasonal beers and rotating releases. You don’t have to be near the sea to make this kind of change. The Mandarin Crush Lager is a Munich-Helles style lager using Bohemian pilsner malt and a boatload of orange puree, resulting in a bready, citrus-drive beer with low hop profile.

How it looks

Pours a golden honey colour with a slightly murky body and low carbonation. A thin layer of microbubbles rests on top of the glass.

How it smells

The mixture of bready malt and oranges delivers a slightly bizarre fresh bread and orange zest aroma that is pleasant, but can come off as a strange pairing.

How it tastes

At the front end of the flavour you’ll get the orange barging into your taste buds and knocking over the furniture. But the leveling effect of the malt brings down the oranges, making it sweet and fruity, with a touch of grain. The sweetness rolls off and you’ll taste more of the zest from the oranges, along with a grassy hop profile that’s subtle, but gives just enough to balance everything out. Ends with a slightly sticky, dry finish.

Recommended food pairing

The subtle sweetness and low hop profile of a Munich-Helles style beer will pair up well with spicy Curry.
